Impressionistic Art

Grafton Street, Dublin

Grafton Street 3

Grafton Street 3 is the last of a set of three pieces created from images captured on one of Dublin’s main shopping thoroughfares. At the south end lies St. Stephens Green and to the north the entrance to Trinity College. It’s a busy, bustling street in the heart of the city which draws shoppers and tourists to visit its shops or one of the many bars and restaurants to be found here. Those who pause for a moment to look up will be rewarded by the sight of the wonderful Art Deco and Jacobean architecture which remains intact from Victorian times.

Numerous poets and songwriters have referenced Grafton Street in their work, one song, ‘Dublin Saunter’ includes the line “Grafton Street’s a wonderland, there’s magic in the air”. It is unlikely you will visit Dublin without paying the area a visit and who knows you may feel a little of that magic yourself.

Morning stroll, Newcastle beach, County Down, Northern Ireland

Morning Stroll

This impressionistic image of early morning walkers and their dog was captured on Newcastle beach in County Down. It was a cool, calm morning. A perfect place to ease yourself into the day listening to the gentle lap of the waves and enjoying the sight of the Mourne mountains sweeping down to the sea.

Approaching Narnia, Mourne Mountains

Approaching Narnia

C. S. Lewis, author of The Chronicles of Narnia, was inspired by the landscape of the Mournes which he experienced during childhood holidays spent in the area. In later life, in his essay ‘On Stories’, he wrote - “I have seen landscapes, notably in the Mourne Mountains and southwards which, under a particular light, made me feel that at any moment a giant might raise his head over the next ridge.” You may not get quite the same feeling as C. S. Lewis but one thing is for sure these mountains will definitely leave an imprint on your soul.

Grafton Street 2

Grafton Street 2 is the second in a set of three pieces created from images captured on one of Dublin’s main shopping thoroughfares. At the south end lies St. Stephens Green and to the north the entrance to Trinity College. It’s a busy, bustling street in the heart of the city which draws shoppers and tourists to visit its shops or one of the many bars and restaurants to be found here. Mirage, Mourne Mountains

Beyond The Mirage

This is an impressionistic image captured close to the Mourne Mountains in County Down. It aims to capture the magical mystical feeling you can experience when visiting this beautiful area. Once you have visited the Mournes you will always go back, as John Muir said “The Mountains are calling and I must go”. I suggest you pay them a visit and look beyond the mirage, you will not be disappointed.

Let there be love, Ballintoy harbour church, Antrim, Northern Ireland

Let There Be Love

This image, portraying a story of blossoming love, has been created from a number of components. The base image was captured close to Ballintoy harbour on the Antrim coast as I walked towards Ballintoy church, which can be seen in the distance. The impressionistic figures, trees, blossoms and birds have been layered and digitally painted with great care to create this romantic scene.

Grafton Street, Dublin

Grafton Street 1

Grafton Street 1 is from a series of three pieces created from images captured on one of Dublin’s main shopping thoroughfares. At the south end lies St. Stephens Green and to the north the entrance to Trinity College. It’s a busy, bustling street in the heart of the city which draws shoppers and tourists to visit its shops or one of the many bars and restaurants to be found there. Trees reflected in river

Reflections

This is an image of trees reflected in a river on a rather dull, overcast day. Beauty can be found wherever we are, if we just take the time to look.

Envelop me, Spelga dam, Mourne mountains, Northern Ireland

Envelop Me

This impressionistic image was captured close to Spelga Dam in the Mournes. The title ‘Envelop Me’ really does describe how being in the midst of these mountains can feel. It’s as if they are wrapping themselves around you and providing a sense of calmness and comfort.

Grafton Street, Dublin

On Grafton Street

On Grafton Street is a panorama incorporating the three images from this series. It aims to give a more complete view of the atmosphere of this area of social activity which lies within the heart of Dublin. As Mehmet Murat ildan has said “An invitation of a beautiful street is an invitation to walk within a dream!”. Consider yourself invited.

Solitude, Rossnowlagh Beach, County Donegal.

Solitude

This is an impressionistic image of beautiful Rossnowlagh beach in County Donegal. It is one of Ireland's main surfing beaches. With its soft golden sand and exceptional views it is no surprise that it attracts walkers, swimmers and sailors as well as surfers. One thing I can guarantee, whatever your reason for visiting, this is a beach that will raise your spirit and bring solace to your soul.

On The Periphery, O’Connell Bridge, Dublin

On The Periphery

O’Connell Bridge, which is the main connection between the north and south sides of Dublin, lies at the heart of the city and its people. It spans the river Liffey and is wider than it is long. It always seems to be busy with people rushing about their daily business or moving between the two main shopping areas of Dublin.

This image aims to portray the constant movement on the bridge where the only stillness to be found is with those on the peripheries. This may be one of the many homeless who often line the edges of the bridge unnoticed by the passing crowds or a tourist who has stopped to get their bearings and take in the view of the river.

Beach Pillars, Newcastle, Down, Mourne, Percy French

Flaxen Sea

This is an impressionistic portrayal of a beach scene from Newcastle in County Down, Northern Ireland. This is where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea as described in the famous song from Percy French. The day this image was captured the light had a quality and colour that created a calm evocative scene with sea and sky merging into the distant mist. This is the type of image that quickens my heartbeat and can move me to tears, it is so beautiful.

Beach Pillars, Newcastle, Co Down

Beach Pillars

I have a love of impressionistic photography and art. This piece was created from a photograph I captured on Newcastle beach, County Down. It depicts my impression of the colours and emotions I experienced on that particular day. Every time I look at this image I feel the pull of the sea.

Fishing Boats, Corbet Lough, Banbridge, Down

Boats On Corbet Lough

Corbet Lough can be found close to the town of Banbridge in County Down. It is a very popular location for fishermen and walkers. The images used in this digital painting were captured on a misty summer morning around 5am, before any of the usual visitors had arrived. It is a very peaceful and serene place at that time of day, which is what I hope I have depicted in this image.

Autumn Stroll, Urban City Park

Autumn Stroll

This piece was created from images of bare trees over which I digitally painted the leaves and blended in the figures and background elements to portray a park within an urban environment. It weaves an impression of the colours and mood of a crisp autumn day in a city.
